A Rail Holiday on the British Pullman

If you've ever wanted to experience the lifestyle of the 1920's elite then luxury rail holidays are a great place to start. I only wish I had found myself some vintage leather suitcases and a suitably ridiculous hat for this journey to match the classic transport and service which are included. Booked as a three day romantic getaway, the service and style of the British Pullman truly were fit for a queen. It was therefore not surprising to discover that the carriages of the train were once for royal use, and have a long history of prominent passengers. This was a fabulous journey back to the golden age of train travel.

After a night in a swanky London hotel we were ready to go, and were transported back in time as we boarded the train at Victoria station. The getting there is just as important as the destination on this break. Bellinis and brunch were a beautifully indulgent way to start the trip, which continued to pamper and please us throughout. The route wound through the stunning countryside, quintessentially English examples of fairy-tale villages and rolling hills decorating the route. 1920's courtesy and service was all part of the experience, with our liveried steward offering polite, personal service. The pristine table clothes were decorated with fresh flowers, and we reclined in our upholstered arm chairs to watch the world go by.

Our stop of in the medieval city of York was also an adventure steeped in history. The high arches of the station itself have surely looked down upon many romantic wavings of hankies as trains departed in clouds of steam and whistles. The Roman city walls still stand around York, and walking through is a step back in time to explore the quirky wooden beamed shops of The Shambles and the surrounding mazes of narrow streets. The guided tour took in all the major sights including the famous Minster, an 800 year old masterpiece jewelled with stained glass and countless historic tales. The Jorvik Centre was a fearsome and fun way to learn about the cities origins. Feeling inspired by our journey up, I was fascinated by the tales of invention and exploration which go with the many historic carriages and locomotives at the National Railway Museum.

Champagne greeted us as we boarded the train back to London, followed by a five course dinner and wine which left me feeling positively regal. Our personal table for two was beautifully set with all the service and style you would expect from a gourmet restaurant coupled with the charm and elegance of the 1920's. It added a real sense of occasion to get dressed up in our formal finery, men donning their tuxes and women in evening gowns. Decedent decor and Art Deco style make this a true 'palace on wheels', as Pullman intended with his design. The atmosphere was perfect for the romantic break we had been hoping for.
